NEW TO WOOD PELLET GRILLS?

Here’s what you need to know about cooking with wood pellets. When using a wood pellet grill, here’s what you’ll want to look out for:

THIN, BLUE, SMOKE.

An initial thick white smoke is to be expected, but it should turn thin & blue, and be hard to see after the grill is warmed up.

OPTIMISED PELLET SIZE & STRENGTH

Prevent auger jams by using pellets that aren’t too big or too hard for your grill. Traeger pellets are the ideal size for our augers.

LOW MOISTURE

The ideal moisture level for wood pellets is 5%. Anything wetter won’t get hot enough, and anything drier will result in an acidic taste in your food.

Our teams go through a strenuous daily process of quality control, leaving no pellet behind so you know you’re getting the best no matter which flavour you choose. It takes top-performing pellets to have a top-performing grill, as well as the ultimate flavour and taste, so Traeger ensures that only the best hardwood is used. This also means implementing regular burn tests at our mills to make sure we’re achieving consistency, and perfect smoke, you can rely on in each bag.

THE "GOLD STANDARD" IN PELLET PRODUCTION

MILLED IN THE USA

Traeger's pellet mills are all located in the U.S. Having our pellet mills located in the U.S. gives Traeger the ability to oversee the process from raw wood, all the way to bagging, and ensure it meets our strong guidelines for smoke perfection every step of the way. If our pellets don’t meet our standard requirements, they don’t make it into a bag—simple as that.

PELLET PRODUCTION PROCESS

Traeger pellet mills use a special pelletising process to create the best pellets on the market. We start with clean, green hardwood, then dry it to the optimal moisture content for smoke creation, using a rotating drum and furnace. The hardwood material is then run through a hammer mill to uniformly grind the sawdust to an optimal size. Once uniform, they’re compressed and run through a rotating die and extruded out into the signature Traeger pellets you know and love. The last step is cooling them in a holding bin before getting bagged and ready to ship to your Traeger dealer, or right to your doorstep.

SUSTAINABILITY

Traeger is focused on sustainability. Where possible, we utilize the sawdust from clean, green hardwood that would otherwise go to waste to make our pellets.

HOW DO YOU USE TRAEGER WOOD PELLETS?

Using wood pellets when cooking is not only extremely simple but will also transform your cooking. Fill the pellet hopper with your desired pellet, set the desired temperature (Pro Tip: You can also do this in the app), and the grill does the rest. Once the grill reaches temperature, place your food on the grates and let the wood-fired magic happen. As the pellets burn, they infuse your food with delicious wood-fired flavour, turning ordinary dishes into culinary masterpieces. Learn how to properly store your pellets and change them out by reading our articles.

DO I NEED TO USE TRAEGER PELLETS?

To ensure your grill runs at its highest performance, and your food has the purest flavour, we recommend using genuine Traeger Hardwood Pellets. Our pellets meet our strict quality standards and are made of all-natural, virgin hardwood and contain no binders or chemicals - ensuring a clean burn, trusted performance, and unmatched wood-fired flavour. Our pellets are specifically designed to yield the best results on our grills. We cannot guarantee that other wood pellets meet our strict quality standards. The use of other wood pellets, wood chips, firebricks, or heating pellets can damage your grill.

CAN I LEAVE MY PELLETS OUTSIDE?

We do not recommend storing your pellets outdoors because moisture negatively affects the pellets, sometimes making them unusable.r

DO I ALWAYS HAVE TO USE PELLETS WHEN COOKING?

Yes, hardwood pellets are the heat source inside the grill and the grill cannot function without them. Not only do they provide heat, but they also provide the wood-fired flavour.

HOW SHOULD I STORE MY PELLETS?

We recommend storing pellets indoors, in an airtight container, to avoid moisture getting into the pellets. Traeger recommends using our StayDRY Pellet Bin & Lid for optimal results.
